Linux, which has been the third major computer based Operating System after Windows and Apple’s iOS, has been coming out with their latest OS, which would be named after Freya – the Norse Goddess of Love and War.
Freya is expected to be an upgrade to last year’s “Luna”.
This is expected to build on the platform of Ubuntu 14.04 and will be introducing various new features.
This new version was originally expected to be named after Isis, the Egyption goddess of magic and life.
However, when the Islamic State decided to gain the “isis” name a bad image, they dropped the idea and instead went with the name of the Norse Goddess.
The hardware support is expected to be upgraded with this new version of Linux, and GTK 3.10 will be replaced by GTK 3.12, which gives it a nice look and feel to the traditionally bland look of the Linux and the newly introduced titles and bars add a different kind of a charm to the desktop feel of the new version of Linux.
One might think that the Norsified Elementary is based on the GNOME, it is actually not. It looks a lot like it was based on the GNOME Shell, with a clock in the middle of the bar placed on top, with an applications menu on the left and indicator applications on the right.
It has its own desktop called Pantheon and many more ‘homegrown’ components such as the slingshot launcher and the wingpanel (which is placed on top) and Plank (the dock).
These visually appealing tools make elementary look one of the best looking versions of Linux, it, however being hard to customize. It is also a very user friendly design. It also has an amazing keyboard based navigation system. Right Clicking on the title bar will minimize the windows.
There are many such features which are expected to be introduced with this version of Linux. Will you be using this? Let us know.
