Almost 134,386 U.S. Navy Sailors personal data has recently fallen prey to hackers. No indication of who the hackers behind the scheme are has been given, but it has been made pretty clear that the hack might have been triggered by a weak link in the security structure.
Over the years, the internet has become more and more unsafe for people across the globe. No one, not even the top government agencies are going untouched by this increasing danger of Cyber vandalism. In fact, any body with more sensitive information up its sleeves and a tighter security mesh is more prone to these attacks. On the contrary, many ethical hackers are now joining the war against cyber crime and cyber terrorism. One standing example of this is the ethical hacking society ‘Anonymous’, that has been waging a staunch war against the the Islamic State, with fairly pleasing results. We would not say that they won, at least not yet, but Anonymous was able to give the inhuman terrorist group a major set back.
Unfortunately, for the U.S. Navy, this was a sudden and a rather shocking event. The sailors, whose personal data was compromised, including sensitive information like the social security numbers are the most agitated. These have called for a huge and thorough inspection of what is actually going wrong. This work was provided to Hewlett Packard, who later confirmed that the hack was actually the result of a virus affected laptop that might have been brought in by a contractor. This affected laptop helped transmit sensitive data over the internet, without the knowledge of the primary user. This has further caused the responsible bodies to now become more alert about the ever impending danger.
The Sailors who have been affected will be informed in a rather official way. They will will receive emails, phone calls and letters informing them accordingly.
