Mozilla is a seasoned veteran when it comes to the world of technology. The company has always been making the news for some or the other reason, and has always remained in a positive light over the years. The company has been in the news lately for deciding to cancel their plans of in-browser ads for Firefox. The company is now in the news as they have released a new application called ‘Focus’ by Firefox, which is basically a content blocker for the iOS 9.
The primary purpose of this application is to block ads, but it is also capable of blocking trackers. Hence, it is not limited to just being an ad-blocker, but is an all-round content blocker. This application can now be downloaded from Apple’s App Store.
The iOS 9 has a while new content blocking system, and Focus utilizes it in its functioning. If you have ever used a content blocker in the past, you would know that it requires a set up before you can use it to its full potential. After downloading the app you need to activate its content blocking features with your system-wide iOS settings. Don’t worry, it’s not as technical as it sounds, you need to open the app to find a guide to these settings.
In an interview with popular website VentureBeat, Nick Nguyen, the VP of Product for Firefox said that “This is our first effort, just like everything we build, we’re trying to make the Internet better, long term.” Focus is “aligned with who we are as an organization,” he added, which that means supporting the Web.
Nguyen pointed out that many other iOS 9 blockers are for-profit. They either charge you upfront or generate money by selectively letting content (including ads) through. Focus is completely free, and Mozilla is transparent about what the app does and doesn’t do.
