The name of John McAfee used to be one that commanded some sort of respect at some point in time. Over the past few years, the McAfee brand had been slowly fading away, but John McAfee had kept it alive with his statements and antics. The man has struck once again, this time in the wake of the tense Apple vs FBI ongoings, where he has offered to break into the iPhone for the FBI, ‘free of charge’, and in his own words, he’ll eat a shoe if he can’t.
Apple vs the FBI had been going on over the matter of encryption, as the company was expected to hand over a backdoor to the FBI for the iPhone. This backdoor would help the FBI break into the iPhone easily. Basically it will prevent the phone from not earasing all its data after a few forced attempts and incorrect passwords.
Tim Cook outright refused to provide such kind of a backdoor stating that “It would be the equivalent of a master key, capable of opening hundreds of millions of locks—from restaurants and banks to stores and homes. No reasonable person would find that acceptable.”
While even John McAfee supports Apple over this, he claims that he will help the FBI break into the iPhone without Apple having to do it, which he says, could result ‘in the end of America’.
“I will, free of charge, decrypt the information on the San Bernardino phone, with my team,” said John McAfee in an essay which was published in the Business Insider. “We will primarily use social engineering, and it will take us three weeks. If you accept my offer, then you will not need to ask Apple to place a back door in its product, which will be the beginning of the end of America.”
Things could take an interesting turn if the FBI take the support of John McAfee, but it doesn’t look like such a situation would arise.
